How to Break In New Goalkeeper Gloves
Share
Never wear a pair of match gloves for games straight out of the box.
It sounds obvious once you know it, but it's one of the most common mistakes keepers make — especially when a new pair arrives and you're itching to wear them on match day. The latex needs time to bed in, and skipping that process can cost you grip, confidence, and the lifespan of the glove.
Think of it like a new pair of football boots. You wouldn't buy them on Friday and wear them for a cup final on Saturday. The boots need breaking in, and goalkeeper gloves are no different. A properly prepared glove will feel more comfortable, provide more consistent grip, and perform better when it matters most.
Don't just take our word for it — watch what actually happens when new gloves get wet without being pre-washed first:
Here's the VOS way to break in a new pair properly.
Step 1: Pre-Wash Before Anything Else
Before you even think about wearing your new gloves, wash them. New goalkeeper gloves come with residual manufacturing chemicals on the latex that create a temporary, unreliable stickiness. Pre-washing removes these chemicals and activates the latex's natural grip — giving you consistent, reliable performance from the start.

Step 2: Wear Them in Training First
Once washed and dried, wear your new gloves in training for a few sessions before using them in a match. This gives the latex time to mould to the shape of your hand, soften up, and start performing at its best.
Training sessions are the perfect environment for this — lower stakes, varied ball work, and enough repetition to properly bed the gloves in. By the time match day comes around, they'll feel like a natural extension of your hands.
A few sessions is usually enough, but trust how they feel. When the grip feels consistent and the fit feels second nature, they're ready.
Step 3: Wash After Every Use
From the very first training session, get into the habit of washing your gloves after every use. Dirt, sweat, and mud break down the latex quickly — regular washing keeps the grip fresh and extends the life of the glove significantly.
This applies to match gloves and training gloves equally. The keepers who get the most out of their gloves are the ones who treat glove care as part of their routine, not an afterthought.
We had a customer who was buying a new pair every few weeks. He didn't realise you needed to wash them — he'd wear them until the stickiness wore off, assume the gloves had stopped working, and order another pair. Once he started washing after every session, the same pair lasted him the whole season.

Pre-Match: Dampen the Palms
Before every game, dampen the latex palms with a little water. This activates the grip and gives you noticeably better ball contact from the very first save. It also protects the latex on dry or artificial surfaces.
The Simple Rule
Pre-wash → Train in them → Wash after every use → Match day.
Follow that process and your gloves will perform better, last longer, and give you the confidence to focus on what matters — making saves.
